Learning to Lead (Foundational Concepts)

This one-day program is designed for leaders at all levels, as well as high performing associates who are leading others on projects or teams. This program is also recommended for those associates who aspire to become leaders. Learning to Lead uses self-discovery diagnostics to help participants identify their own personal leadership and conflict styles. The program content focuses on core Montefiore leadership skills such as communication, influence, coaching, team building and conflict management. Interactive and fast paced, participants learn and practice new skills through role plays and group discussions.

At the end of this course you will be able to:
• Build on your existing skills and gain confidence in being a successful leader
• Discuss how your BEST Leadership Style impacts your ability to motivate others
• Examine the dynamics of your team and make necessary changes to better motivate them
• Understand how your Conflict Management style manifests itself in leadership behaviors and ultimately the team’s success

Length: 6 hours

Leadership Essentials (Core Skills)

The goal of Leadership Essentials is to teach participants the foundational skills, tools, policies and expectations of all leaders at Montefiore. This program meets for four consecutive weeks, a total of 14 hours, and is designed for individuals at the supervisor level and above. Specifically, the program covers communication skills, employee and team engagement, performance feedback, interviewing skills, coaching techniques and key HR policies and processes. Highly interactive, the program uses a variety of methods including assessments, lectures, simulations/case studies, small and large group discussions and exercises, films and homework assignments. Attendance at all four sessions is required to receive program credit.

At the end of this program you will be able to:
• Describe the Montefiore selection and hiring process along with key policy expectations
• Create and use open-ended behavioral interviewing questions
• Use the understanding of your DISC leadership profile to create a strategy for better staff communication
• Discuss key employment laws and how they impact your leadership role
• Identify three components of high performing teams and create strategies for implementation
• Set clear, high expectations for staff members and use best practices when monitoring their performance
• Provide specific positive and needs improvement feedback to employees on the spot
• Use the 3A Stress Model to plan for managing day-to-day stress.
• Describe the tell, sell, consult, join model and how it creates team engagement through shared decision making

Prerequisite: Completion of “Learning to Lead” is strongly suggested.

Leader as Coach

This 5-hour course shows leaders the advantages of adopting a coaching approach for delegation, decision making and providing feedback to associates. Using a simple communication model, participants learn to encourage a communication dialogue through the use of questions, which challenge associates to think on their own, reflect on their own performance and be fully engaged.

At the end of this course you will be able to:
• Use a simple coaching model, focused on asking questions, to delegate work, provide feedback and help associates solve problems
• Motivate associates to achieve their peak performance
• Provide associates with feedback they’ll actually apply
• Delegate in a way that ensures associate ownership
• Engage employees to act independently
